Dr. Tom Urbaniak teaches in CBU’s MBA program in Community Economic Development. Tom is presently the Chair of the Board of Governors of Canada’s National Trust, which works with Canadians to protect historic places and regenerate communities. Tom is an expert on governance and administration in the non-profit sector and is called upon frequently to give advice to organizations and to facilitate planning exercises. He is the author of four books, including Her Worship: Hazel McCallion and the Development of Mississauga (University of Toronto Press) and Action, Accommodation, Accountability: Rules of Order for Canadian Organizations (Writing on Stone Press). He has served in pro bono leadership positions for local, provincial, and national organizations, focusing on crime prevention, affordable housing, public libraries, child welfare, and heritage conservation. Tom was founding chair of the Affordable Housing Renovation Partnership (which does research and demonstration projects), helped to establish Habitat for Humanity’s presence in Cape Breton, and proposed Nova Scotia’s first local heritage conservation revolving fund, which is being administered by the Sydney Architectural Conservation Society. Tom is frequently called upon to offer political and policy analysis in the media, giving interviews in both English and French. He is Chair of the Parish Council of St. Mary’s Polish Church in the multicultural, historic community of Whitney Pier, Nova Scotia, where he resides. He is involved in initiatives that bring together people of diverse faith and cultural backgrounds. Tom is a member of the Canadian Polish Research Institute. In 2014, he was a member of the Canadian Election Observation Mission in Ukraine. Tom is Vice Chair of the CBU Senate and serves on the CBU President’s Council on Multicultural Learning.
