Dr. Andrew Parnaby is an Associate Professor with the Department of Cultural & Creative Studies at Cape Breton University. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from Queen’s University, Master of Arts (History) from Simon Fraser University, and PhD from Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he received a SSHRC doctoral fellowship and was named a Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies. Prior to joining CBU in 2003, Dr. Parnaby taught at Dalhousie University and the University of Victoria. A social historian, his research focuses on North America as well as the history of state security in Canada. Dr. Parnaby was a SSHRC post-doctoral research fellow at Saint Mary’s University in 2002-03 and received the Eugene A. Forsey prize in Canadian Labour History in 2002; he is currently a member of the editorial board and assistant editor of Labour/Le Travail. The author of numerous articles and reviews, he has published three books, including Secret Service: Political Policing in Canada, From the Fenians to Fortress America (with Reg Whitaker and Gregory S. Kealey). In 2012, he was awarded the “Canada Prize in the Social Sciences” by the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. He teaches courses in Canadian history, historiography, Atlantic world, and history and film.
