Supramolecular and Traditional Coordination Chemistry

Research in the Bowman-James group involves the strategic design organized molecular frameworks as selective receptors for anions and as ligands for transition metal ions. Our interest in these areas stems from potential environmental and biological applications in sensing, separations, catalysis, and biomimetic chemistry. We also seek to examine the similarities (and differences) between anion supramolecular chemistry and transition metal coordination chemistry. In this particular endeavor we are exploring the same ligands as frameworks for coordinating both anions and transition metals. While a major difference between the two types of chemistry are that anion binding mostly involves hydrogen bonding interactions and transition metal binding involves coordinate covalent (or dative) bonds. Our anion efforts have focused on targeting nucleotides and other phosphate-containing species, as well as small organic and inorganic ions as guests. As such we have explored the capture of oxo anions, halides, pseudo-halides, and carboxylates, ranging in size and shape from relatively compact spherical to linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, and expanded pseudo-linear anions. More recently our attention has shifted to neutral molecules, and in particular the chemical mustards in a collaborative project funded by DTRA (Office of Chemical and Biological Defense B1042831). Mustard recognition is a daunting challenge as these molecules are highly reactive under aqueous conditions, but they are not necessarily prone to molecular recognition in their neutral state.
