Dr. Tanya Brann-Barrett is the Dean of Research, Teaching and Graduate Studies. She currently holds a SSHRC Standard Research Grant for her research project titled “The Learning Significance of Place-based and Virtual Communication Networks in How Young People Living in Disadvantaged Regions Experience Civic Engagement”. The study examines ways older youth living in small post-industrial regions learn about, experience, and understand community engagement. She has published and presented her work locally, nationally and internationally in areas that include social exclusion and rural education; issues of public engagement and citizenship as they relate to youth, gender, and class; and reflexive approaches to multi-media and arts-related ethnography. Dr. Brann-Barrett teaches courses in Health Communication, Family Communication, Film and Communication, Communication Training and Development, Communication Criticism as well as Interpersonal and Public Communication. Her contributions to the community include the design and facilitation of communication training for school children, community groups and organization, and businesses. She also facilitates ‘community engagement through art-making’ workshops throughout the region.
