Phylogeny of marine fungi. Nucleotide sequences have been determined for the SSU rRNA (small subunit ribosomal RNA) genes of several marine eumycota. These are being compared (in collaboration) to sequences of diverse terrestrial eumycota in an investigation of the origin(s) of marine fungi. Genetic diversity in a rare Nova Scotian plant. The bulrush Scirpus longii is rare in Nova Scotia. It may be hybridizing with the common Scirpus cyperinus. The RAPD (rapid amplified polymorphic DNA) method is being applied to DNAs from specimens of each species and putative hybrids to assess genetic diversity within S. longii and interbreeding between the species. Evolutionary Genetics. The adaptive value of genetic variation in a changing environment is being considered from a theoretical point of view. Models are being developed that allow alleles to differ in fitness and in fidelity of replication as they experience competition in fluctuating environments. Experimental tests of these models are possible.
