研究领域

Humic substances are natural organic materials that exist in the environment as a result of the decomposition of plant materials. These large complex molecules have a variety of properties which makes them an important materials for characterization and study. The material is typically classified in this manner: humic acids - the fraction soluble in water (pH greater than 2), fulvic acids - the fraction soluble in water under all pH conditions, and humin - the fraction of humic substances that are insoluble in water at any pH. These humic substances are important to study because of their ability to interact with both inorganic and organic contaminants. This makes them an essential materials for understanding the impact of human activity affecting all areas of the environment. My research currently is investigating a new combined technique known as Pyrolysis/SPME/GC/MS for characterizing these types of materials. As well, various sorption studies involving humin and humic acid with a number of commonly used pesticides and other pollutants (e.g. PAHs) are also being investigated.
