Dr. Wayne Riggs is a professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He obtained his BSc degree in pharmacy in 1971 from UBC and worked in community pharmacy practice until 1979 when he returned to UBC to complete a MSc in pharmacokinetics (1982). Dr. Riggs subsequently worked for two years in hospital pharmacy before coming back to UBC to complete his PhD in 1989 in pharmacokinetics/drug metabolism. Following this, he joined the Faculty as an assistant professor to begin his academic research and teaching career.
Dr. Riggs teaches pharmacokinetics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has also served in a number of administrative roles in the Faculty including chair of the Division of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics, acting associate dean of Graduate Studies and acting associate dean, Academic, member of the Canadian Institutes of Health (CIHR) Pharmaceutical Sciences grant review committee, council member for the International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics (ISSX) and member of the Health Canada TPP Expert Advisory Committee on Bioavailability and Bioequivalence. In addition, he has served as a consultant and member of the board of directors for a number of pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Dr. Riggs has received a number of teaching awards including the UBC Killam Teaching Prize (2), Bristol-Myers Squibb Teaching Award (4), and second year class teaching award (5).

Dr. Wayne Riggs' research interests include detailed studies of the pharmacokinetics of placental transfer of a variety of drugs including the serotonin reuptake inhibitors, which are commonly used in the treatment of pre- and post-partum depression, with collaborators in the departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pediatrics, and Reproductive Psychiatry (UBC Faculty of Medicine). Another major area of research involves the investigation of the effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms in reductase, cytochrome P450 and transport genes on the efficacy/toxicity of various drugs used in the treatment of breast cancer and leukemia as well as on endogenous hormones in prostate cancer in conjunction with clinician scientists at the BC Cancer Agency, Prostate Cancer Centre (UBC Faculty of Medicine) and Department of Zoology (UBC). Dr. Riggs’ research has been continuously funded by CIHR. He has trained one MSc and 13 PhD students who have gone on to successful careers in academia (Australia), pharmaceutical industry (Merck, Genentech, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Vertex, Novartis, Mundipharma), and government (Health Canada).
