Identification of Molecular Alterations Predicting Cancer Development

Visualization for detection of cancers Development of new optical devices and computer imaging platforms to predict progression for oral premalignant lesions: A key barrier to the management of premalignant disease is the lack of tools that can guide decision to biopsy. One of Dr. Rosin's key research projects focuses on developing and validating tissue optical tools that can be used to facilitate the visualization of changes in the oral mucosa that require further assessment by biopsy. A parallel development involves the training of high resolution computerized microscopy systems to identify subtle alterations in the cells of cancers and premalignant disease obtained with such visualization tools. Supported by NIH/NIDCR. Biomarkers for carcinogenesis The identification of novel genes and chromosomal regions that regulate normal oral epithelial cell behavior and that are altered in early premalignant lesions: Identifying biomarkers for risk prediction for early premalignant lesions better guides the clinician in identifying changes to the tissue that are associated with a high likelihood of oral cancer development 5-10 years prior to its occurrence. This allows for early intervention in the disease. We are identifying and assessing such markers within a large ongoing longitudinal study of ~700 patients. Supported by NIH/NIDCR. Community outreach for oral cancer prevention Knowledge transfer to community dentists: Technology developed within the BC Oral Cancer Prevention Program for the purpose of early oral cancer detection is now being transferred into community dental practices. This process is ongoing in BC with several cohorts of community dentists now evaluating new technology on patients during regular hygiene recall exams. The data being generated in these studies is being published within key dental journals to guide the uptake and dissemination of new technology. Supported by BC Cancer Foundation High-risk underserved populations: This project is assessing the oral cancer-related needs of high-risk communities, identifying facilitators and barriers to oral cancer control. We have identified 4 groups as a focus: South Asian immigrants, the Vancouver Downtown Eastside (DTES), Aboriginal communities, and those geographically distant from cancer control services in rural and remote regions of BC. These groups represent vulnerable communities comprised of individuals with low socioeconomic status, different ethnic backgrounds, or residing in different geographic regions where risk factors, barriers to accessing services, and disease incidence are much higher. Supported by CIHR and the BC Cancer Foundation
