The surface and interfacial characteristics of solids such as supported catalysts, polymer blends, and thin films are important to many of their useful material properties. Characterization of these heterogeneous or amorphous solids can be difficult or impossible to achieve by conventional methods such as X-ray diffraction. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is an increasingly important technique in the fields of materials science and surface chemistry. Our group pioneered the application of NMR spectroscopy to organic monolayers, and more recently, to polyelectrolyte films. We use advanced solid-state NMR techniques in conjunction with transmission electron microscopy, vibrational spectroscopy and other surface science tools to study the surface and interfacial properties of novel materials such as monolayer stabilized metal colloids or lamellar metal phosphonates.
