Dr. Daniels is an associate professor and clinician-educator in the Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine. After graduating from the University of Manitoba medical school, he completed his core Internal Medicine residency and General Internal Medicine subspecialty training at the University of Alberta. He has been on faculty in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alberta since 2009. He has also completed the Master of Health Professions Education program at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2013. Dr. Daniels spends 40% of his time in clinical medicine, all of which are in educational venues such as inpatient wards, consults, and outpatient urgent clinics. Dr. Daniels is a well-recognized teacher and mentor both at the bedside and in the classroom with almost 20 awards for teaching excellence and mentorship since 2009. The majority of his academic portfolio is dedicated to the educational mandate of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. He spends 60% of his time on educational activities split between non-clinical teaching (curriculum and assessment design, large and small group instruction, peer review of teaching), educational administration (Associate Program Director of Assessment for Internal Medicine residency program, and Director of Clinical Assessment for the MD program), and educational scholarship. He currently runs the physical examination course for the first and second year medical students which focuses on an evidence-based, rational approach to the physical exam, and oversees clinical assessment in the MD program through OSCEs and workplace based assessment. He is also the Associate Program Director for Assessment of the residency program. His first focus for the residency program is improving and innovating an already outstanding program of assessment and readying it for competency-based medical education. Dr. Daniels’ research program currently focuses on optimizing assessment methods in medical education. He has published and presented several abstracts on ways to improve assessment methods such as MCQ exams and OSCEs. His current main research project is revamping the In-training Evaluation Report and Mini-CEX process to meet the needs of a competency-based medical education framework.
