个人简介

Maryam received her dentistry degree (D.M.D.) from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Iran. She received her M.Sc. in Dental Sciences and her Ph.D. in Oral Health Sciences from the University of British Columbia in Canada. She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Health Education and received a certificate in "Teaching in Higher Education" from the Teaching and Academic Growth (TAG) at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Maryam has been involved for most of her academic career with the oral health needs of young children - as an educator, a researcher, and a practitioner. After completion of her postgraduate training in UBC, she joined the University of Alberta as an Assistant Professor. As a result of her postgraduate training, she became well-versed in both quantitative and qualitative research methods. She established a research program in collaboration with different stakeholders including researchers from other disciplines, non-profit community organizations working marginalized population, and government. The mission of her program is to improve the oral health of children through collaborations directed at prevention, education, and advocacy. The vision is that through collaborations and partnerships, all high-risk children of marginalized communities will receive similar oral health care as the general population. Her research team including graduate and undergraduate students, research assistants, and clinical faculty colleagues explores the feasibility of implementing community-based oral health promotion programs responsive to unique needs of different cultures. Maryam has quickly gained national recognition for her research expertise from both dental and non-dental organizations. She has been awarded a seed grant from the Alberta Centre for Child, Family, and Community Research to explore the role of social capital in oral health of Aboriginal children. She has also received an operating grant from the Prairie Metropolis Centre to explore the psychosocial barriers to prevention of dental disease among children from African immigrants and a Knowledge Translation grant from Alberta Innovates Health Solutions. She serves as an external reviewer of both national and international grant institutes as well as an ad hoc reviewer of several dental and non-dental journals on a regular basis. Maryam is an active member of Alberta Dental Association, Alberta Association of Pediatric Dentistry, Canadian and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Education Association, Canadian Association of Public Health Dentistry, and International Association for Dental Research. She is also a Member Scholar of the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology, Research Affiliate of the Prairie Metropolis Centre, and a member of the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute at the University of Alberta.
