Dr. Reena Talwar completed her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1994 and went on to complete a General Practice Residency (GPR) at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Talwar then became a research fellow in the Division of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center, where she investigated and published the effects of open vs. closed treatment of bilateral condylar fractures on masticatory forces and function. In 1997, she became a resident in a combined Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) residency program at Baylor College of Dentistry, a member of the Texas A&M University system, in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Talwar’s PhD research involved cellular and molecular effects of 17-β Estradiol in a chondrocyte cell culture model, to evaluate the effects of hormones on cartilage as it relates to Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD). She was also involved in numerous clinical research projects as a resident in OMFS. After completing her residency training, Dr. Talwar was an Assistant Professor in the Discipline of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Kentucky (UK). She was involved in academic teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate residency program level at UK, as well as published research related to third molar extractions and trauma. In 2005, Dr. Talwar became an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry in the Department of Biological and Diagnostic Sciences and at the Faculty of Medicine, in the Department of Anatomy. She was the course director for Gross Anatomy and Head and Neck Anatomy from 2006 through 2010 at both the undergraduate (Dental) and graduate residency (OMFS, Endodontics, Anesthesia) levels, respectively. During this period, she helped develop modern teaching modalities (i.e. Computer based 3-D anatomical model) for head and neck anatomy at the Faculty of Dentistry. Dr. Talwar was also involved in academic teaching at the graduate residency level in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. In September 2010, Dr. Talwar joined the Department of Dentistry at the University of Alberta as an Associate Professor (tenure-stream) in the discipline of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Her primary focus as a new faculty member is to help support and develop research and teaching in the Department of Dentistry at the U of A. Dr. Talwar is also a practicing clinician in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and plans to help develop a graduate level residency program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alberta.
