Michael graduated from Heriot-Watt University in 1985 with a first class honours degree in Microbiology and Brewing. After working for Scottish and Newcastle Breweries he studied for a PhD at St Andrews on the Molecular Genetics of β-lactam production inCephalosporium acremonium and Penicillium chrysogenum. He then undertook postdocs at Whitbread Breweries on the genetic manipulation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, UEA on the plant pathogen Cladosporium fulvum and at Clemson University (USA) on aflatoxin and pectinase production by Aspergillus flavus. He then joined the University of Wolverhampton in 1994. His current teaching interests are molecular genetics of fungi, polyphosphate metabolism and forensic taphonomics
