研究领域

My research background is in molecular and population genetics, and I am developing research in forensic biology by applying this experience to questions of a forensic nature. I am interested in the development of nucleic acid (DNA and RNA) assays to determine the source, type and time of deposition of forensic samples such as single or mixed body fluid stains, and the potential for these assays to be carried out in situ at crime scenes using chemical sensors. I am currently involved in a project to deliver a series of knowledge exchange workshops on RNA profiling to the Scottish Police Authority Forensic Services, to determine the potential for implementation of RNA analysis in Scottish casework. I am also interested in the development and use of marker panels for determining phenotypic, ancestry and age information about unknown DNA sample donors, which could provide intelligence to police investigations. It is clear that next-generation sequencing technologies are increasingly being used in forensic genetic analyses, and I am exploring the potential for these technologies to be applied to whole-genome sequencing of mixed DNA samples, in order to determine the relative representation of the different contributors to the mixture
