I have a broad interest in social behaviour and ecology and I am particularly interested in (social) learning and acoustic communication. In my PhD, I hope to understand better which ecological variables influence tool manufacture in New Caledonian crows (Corvus moneduloides) and how their tool use is related to other aspects of their behaviour. In August 2012, I started my PhD in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews under the supervision of Dr. Christian Rutz and supported by a scholarship from the BBSRC. Prior to my PhD, I worked for two years as scientific trainee in the educational and PR department of the State Museum of Natural History in Karlsruhe, Germany. In 2009 I graduated with a Diploma in Biology from Heidelberg University, Germany, with a major in zoology and minors in molecular biology, psychology and ecology. My thesis “Quiet song in common blackbirds (Turdus merula) – Anonymity by shifting from full song to aggressive twitter song?” was supervised by Prof. T. Dabelsteen (University of Copenhagen) and Prof. Th. Braunbeck (Heidelberg University). I investigated whether male blackbirds, as part of a communication network (where they are exposed to eavesdroppers), are able to stay anonymous during aggressive encounters. During my studies I was awarded Erasmus (2006/2007) and DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service, 2009) scholarships to study at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
