Structures and Physical Properties of Solid State Polymeric Materials

The major target of our lab is "To develop novel functional polymers by controlling the three dimensional and electronic structures of aromatic polymers and fluoropolymers". In aromatic polymers, many substances are known to exhibit interesting thermal, electronic, and optical properties, and they form a major group of high performance polymers. In particular, fluorine-containing polyimides and highly fluorescent polyimides are attractive materials which possess high optical functionalities and high thermal stability. At present, we are investigating the structure-property relationships of aromatic polymers (polyimides) and fluoropolymers (vinylidene-fluoride copolymers and their inclusion compounds) in the solid state (films, nanofibers), and developing novel functional polyimides. Our present studies are as follows. To visit our lab is always welcome. Research Topics : Precise measurements of physical properties (refractive index, birefringence, photo-absorption, and fluorescent emission, thermal conductivity) and functionalization of aromatic polymers. Investigation and development of novel optically functional polymers (e.g. high fluorescent material etc.) by changing the electronic states, conformation, orientation, and molecular packing caused by substituent effects. Molecular design of transparent and colorless polymers that shows high fluorescent emission in the visible long wavelength region (Wavelength : 600-800 nm). Development of solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy methods applicable to fluoropolymer and aromatic polymers. Structure analysis of fluoropolymer nanofibers using high speed magic-angle-spinning 19F- and 13C-NMR. Development of thermally stable optical material and highly heat-conductive material using inorganic/organic nano-hybrid materials. Fabrication of highly effective and wide angle light scattering films and fluorescence scattering films using polyimide nano-fibers. Prediction of the optical properties of fluorine- and sulfur-containing polymers from vacuum-uv to far-infrared wavelength regions by quantum chemical (Density functional theory) calculations.
