I am interested in the responses of cereal crops to abiotic stress factors. Gaining an understanding of why some plants tolerate harsh environmental conditions will provide a basis for developing cereal crops with a broader geographical range of cultivation and with higher yields. At present the major global research focus is on cultivation in arid lands (high irradiance, high temperature, low rainfall), but there are also vast tracts of land at high latitudes where growth conditions are suitable for cereal cultivation apart from sporadic spring and autumn frosts.
