Bioorganic Chemistry/Natural Product Chemistry

Our research interest is focused on the chemistry and biochemistry of secondary metabolites, in particular lipid substances, including terpenoids and steroids. The structures, biosynthetic pathway and physiological roles of these substances are subjects of our studies. Knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and ecology will be useful in our study. For further detail, visit our homepage and enjoy outlines of each project. Research Topics : Study on a membrane receptor of the molting hormone, 20-hydroxyecdysone. Study on the chemistry and physiological roles of secondary metabolites secreted from glandular trichomes of plants. Fundamental study on the utilization of the enzymes that catalyze the conversion of phytosterols to cholesterol in insects. Study on the biosynthesis of 20-hydroxyecdysone in insects as well as plants. Study on the biosynthesis of ecdysteroid side chain in plants. Study on a novel acid-catalyzed Meerwein-Wagner rearrangement of ecdysteroids. Isolation and structure elucidation of new natural products of plant origin. Study on the biosynthetic mechanism of steroidal backbone in plants. Study on the biosynthesis of steroidal alkaroids in Solanaseae plants. Message from the LaboratoryWe would like to broaden our understanding of the secondary metabolites from various standpoints, e.g., structure, biosynthesis, physiological role, and possible utilization. Many students from other universities affiliate with our laboratory. We welcome students with high motivation in higher education and research.
