Organometallic Materials & Catalysis

Our SMS (Supramolecular & Molecular Science) laboratory is interested in challenges at the interface of molecular and supramolecular sciences and their relationship and applications in other intersecting areas such as catalysis, molecular imaging, small molecule activation and inter-metallic cooperation. New and significant results have since emerged on four fronts, viz. migrational and dynamic carbenes; functional catalysis supported by flexible nitrogen-rich ligands; hemilabile complexes; functional supramolecules. In the recent years, we have developed a new program in N-heterocyclic carbenes of catalytically active metals, notably ruthenium, gold, copper, palladium, platinum and nickel. A large variety of new and functional carbenes have been synthesized, and they have been applied to a range of catalytic systems such as hydrosilylation and different forms of C-C couplings. Isolation of the bridging carbenes and hemilabile coordination of triazoles is among the most notable achievements. The development of POLO (polymers of oligomers), which were creations of our research, has taken another important step forward. This has merged with the development of multifunctional ligands prepared from click-methods in the self-assembly of coordination polymers, including achiral and chiral assemblies.
