Nanomaterials have unique physical characteristics which promote their application in a wide range of fields. Our research focuses on the preparation of nanomaterials and nanocomposites as all-in-one medical diagnostics and therapeutic devices; ‘theranostics’. This involves the design and engineering of nanostructured materials as drug delivery vehicles, the development of nanoparticles as optical and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) contrast agents, investigation of stimuli-responsive 'on-off' switchable contrast agent devices, and understanding the interaction of these materials with human cell lines. Another area of interest for the group is the development of bactericidal nanocomposites as recyclable water purification systems. The work is highly interdisciplinary, with inorganic particle preparation and organic synthesis overlapping with life sciences. The research group collaborates with Polymer scientists, Engineers as well as the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University.
