Streptococcus pneumoniae Biofilm Evolution
Biofilms are the principal life style for many species of bacteria in industrial, medical, and environmental settings. Biofilms display a greatly increased tolerance to many conventional antimicrobial interventions facilitating chronic infections, and biofouling.
During biofilm formation S. pneumoniae undergoes rapid parallel evolution of certain genes, producing colony variants. These colony variants display significantly altered phenotypes with changes to many clinically relevant factors including virulence, metabolism, and biofilm formation. Understanding the evolutionary mechanisms and phenotypes evolved within biofilms is necessary for effective measures to be developed to counteract them.
Micro computed tomography of biofilms within Galleria mellonella
In-vivo animal models are important tools to enable research to model as accurately as possible the interactions of bacteria, and their biofilm formation. We are developing novel techniques for whole organism biofilm imaging within G. mellonella larvae.
