I completed my undergraduate degree in Newcastle upon Tyne before heading to another Newcastle, this time in Australia to undertake a PhD. There I wrote my thesis on chromosome division in oocytes, a highly specialised division with clinical relevance to the origin of trisomies (like Down Syndrome) and to miscarriage. In Newcastle I developed techniques for automated, 3D imaging of cells expressing multiple fluorescently-tagged proteins using timelapse microscopy. Now in Southampton I use this approach to track the movements and destruction of various proteins throughout the cell cycle, helping to further our understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind chromosome segregation.
