个人简介
Dr Smith was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia in 1992. After graduation from the University of Nottingham, he trained in anaesthesia in Nottingham, London, Plymouth, and Bristol before being appointed as Consultant in cardiac anaesthesia in Glasgow in 1990. He completed his DM on electromyographic monitoring of muscle function during anaesthesia in 1996.
Dr Smith provides a clinical link for three different research groups within the University of Southampton; the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (Prof R Allen and Dr S Bell), the vascular biology group (Prof G Clough, Dr N Englyst), and the molecular biology group (Prof P Townsend).
Dr Smith is Consultant in adult and paediatric cardiac anaesthesia, and adult cardiac intensive care, at Southampton General Hospital.
研究领域
Dr Smith’s research interests are in monitoring of the anaesthetic state during surgery, and perioperative care for the cardiac surgical patient.
Monitoring anaesthesia
Evaulation of EEG-based techniques for assessing cerebral activity during anaesthesia and development of methodology to enable faster, more reliable, data acquisition during surgery. This work is a collaboration with Prof Robert Allen and Dr Steven Bell in the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research.
Microparticle activity during cardiac surgery
In collaboration with the vascular biology group (Prof Geraldine Clough, Dr Nicola Englyst), this project explores the role of platelet and endothelial microparticles in coagulation during cardiac surgery.
Anaesthetic preconditioning
This project, in collaboration with Prof Paul Townsend, examines the cellular mechanisms of myocardial protection by volatile anaesthetic agents during the ischaemic phase of cardiac surgery.
