Marinos Elia is Professor of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism and Consultant Physician (appointed in Southampton in 2001). He has served on many national and international committees, has chaired a number of them, including the British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (BAPEN) and the NICE Quality Standard Topic Expert Group on Nutrition Support in Adults the NICE Clinical Commissioning Group Outcomes Indicator Set (CCGOIS), and Review Group on Nutrition Support in Adults the NICE Evidence Update Group on Nutrition Support in Adults as well as the International Society for Body Composition the Research and the Malnutrition Action Group (MAG) of BAPEN. He is a member of the editorial board of six nutrition journals, and has been editor-in-chief of Clinical Nutrition. He also led teams that developed the ‘Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool’ (‘MUST’), the most widely used nutrition screening tool in the UK. He has published extensively on various aspects of nutritional biochemistry and body composition, as well as various aspects of clinical nutrition and metabolism and evidence-based medicine. He has received several national and international awards including the John Lenard-Jones award for outstanding contributions to Clinical Nutrition (2006), Complete Nutrition Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contribution to Medical Nutrition (2011). He was also awarded life-long Honorary membership of European Society of Parental and Enteral Nutrition (2006) and life-long Honorary membership of the British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (2008).

His recent research activities have focused on nutritional care including nutritional screening, health economics of malnutrition, and systematic reviews with meta-analyses on nutritional support. He also continues to undertake research on body composition, and energy requirements.
