Prior to this Andrew served as Director of SHTAC for 12 years between 2002 and 2014. During this time Andrew led the development of SHTAC to become an internationally respected research centre specialising in health technology assessment, securing over £20 million in research funding. Andrew has co-authored over 40 systematic reviews and economic evaluations in key health priority areas, publishing over 100 peer review journal papers and reports. His work with the SHTAC group has directly informed the development of policy and guidance by the Department of Health to the NHS and by other organisations (including the World Health Organisation). In 2006 Andrew was awarded a personal Chair by the University of Southampton in recognition of his work in health technology assessment, becoming Professor of Health Services Research.

Professor Clegg’s research focuses on the use of methods for evidence synthesis (systematic reviews and economic evaluations) in assessing the effectiveness of health technologies and the causation of disease. His collaborative research addresses major policy questions on the use of drugs, devices, procedures, screening and diagnostic programmes, health promotion, public health and other interventions. It is used by national decision-making bodies, health professionals, commissioners and the public to make informed decisions about the provision and use of different forms of health care.
