个人简介
Kim Bull began working at the University of Southampton in 1998 on projects relating to psychosocial outcomes in child and young adult survivors of cancer. Since 2001 she has focused on research into quality of survival (QoS) in children treated for brain tumours.
Kim has studied QoS in children treated in the International Society of Paediatric Oncology – Europe (SIOP-E) ‘PNET’ randomised controlled treatment trials (RCT) for medulloblastoma, the most common type of malignant brain tumour in childhood. Firstly PNET3 trial participants in the UK, then PNET4 participants in seven European countries, and now PNET5 participants in 15 European countries.
In preparation for PNET5 Kim played a key role in developing, with software providers HealthTracker©, a web-based QoS neuro-oncology module in eight languages. This was funded within the European Network for Cancer Research in Children and Adolescents (ENCCA) Network of Excellence research programme (European Commission FP7 research programme).
Kim’s PhD was a longitudinal study of QoL in 110 children throughout England and Wales aged 8-14 years, two thirds of whom were within three years of diagnosis of a cerebellar tumour. The study highlighted the importance of asking children themselves about their own QoL. Kim is a STEM ambassador and regularly take part in ‘meet the scientist’ sessions in the Faculty of Medicine’s LifeLab.
