个人简介

Professor Joy Conway is Professor of Inhalation Sciences within Health Sciences at the University of Southampton. Joy completed the MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences at Southampton University in 1989. Capitalising on a background as a respiratory specialist physiotherapist, the subject of her master's research project was the investigation of the effectiveness of humidification in patients with bronchiectasis. This involved learning lung imaging techniques at the Royal Free Hospital which were then transferred to Southampton General Hospital, thus starting an interest in lung imaging and deposition of aerosols in the respiratory tract. A PhD clinical fellowship followed with Professor Stephen Holgate (MRC Professor of Immunopharmacology) and his department at Southampton University with the PhD awarded in 1996 (application of three-dimensional lung imaging techniques). Appointed as Lecturer (1994) and subsequently Senior Lecturer (2000) via joint appointments between the School of Medicine and the School of Health Profession and Rehabilitation Sciences, Southampton University, then appointed as Reader in Inhalation Sciences to the School of Health Professions in 2003 and is now a Professor. In addition Joy was Visiting Associate Professor, department of cystic fibrosis, School of Medicine , University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, USA in 1999. Joy has acted as scientific advisor to several companies but most notably Profile Therapeutics plc, UK and Britannia Pharmaceuticals Ltd , UK and is one of the founders and a Director of Ockham Biotech Ltd. Joy is associated with several patents.

研究领域

Imaging the lung. Imaging of inhaled, radiolabelled compounds with gamma scintigraphy including Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) for both two and three-dimensional scintigraphy of inhaled agents. Mathematical modelling of inhaled particles via well established collaborations with Prof John Fleming, Southampton General Hospital and Dr Ted Martonen of the US Environmental Protection Agency, N Carolina, US. The use of lung imaging techniques for translational medicine. Exploring the use of techniques such as SPECT, CT and 3-D ventilation imaging as tools for improving the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory disease. Funded as part of the NIHR Southampton Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit (BRU). The Imaging group is one of 5 programmes of research within the BRU. Funding is for 4 years form April 2008. http://www.som.soton.ac.uk/research/iir/About_IIR/bru/ The measurement of muco-ciliary clearance in cystic fibrosis using two and three-dimensional imaging techniques, working with Prof Eric Alton and Dr Jane Davies of Imperial College and the UK Cystic Fibrosis Gene Therapy Consortium, funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust. http://www.cfgenetherapy.org.uk/ The measurement of epithelial permeability in the lungs using an inhaled radiolabels technique. The mapping of deposition of inhaled particles in the lungs of asthmatics and healthy volunteers, working with Air Liquide (France) The use of inhaled, unfractionated heparin as a mucolytic in hyper-secretory lung disease and the formulation of active agents for inhalation. Collaborating with Dr Jan Shute, Reader in Pharmacology, School of Pharmacy, University of Portsmouth. In vitro assessment of aerosols
