个人简介
Giuseppe Pileio grew up in Italy and obtained a Laurea Magistralis degree, magna cum laude, in 2002 at the University of Calabria, Italy. He took his PhD in 2005 under the supervision of Prof. M. Longeri and Prof. J. W. Emsley with a thesis on nuclear magnetic resonance in liquid-crystalline phases. In 2006 he joined, as a Post-Doctoral Researcher, the group of Prof. M. H. Levitt at the University of Southampton where he contributed, both experimentally and theoretically, to the development of the long-lived states idea, addressing many theoretical aspects of the topic and developing original experiments based on it. In 2011 he spent a year as a visitor researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and Cancer Research Institute (University of Cambridge) in Prof. K. M. Brindle’s group working on long-lived states and dynamic nuclear polarisation. At the University of Southampton Giuseppe was promoted to Senior Research Fellow in 2011 and to Lecturer in December 2015.
Giuseppe’s expertise can be summarised as theoretical spin dynamics and NMR methodology and includes relaxation theory, spin-dynamics simulations and advanced experimental techniques in solid- and liquid-state NMR. Giuseppe’s expertise and contribution to NMR research field have been acknowledged locally and nationally by two prizes: The Dean’s Prize for Research Excellence awarded by the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Southampton (Dec 2013) and The BRSG/NMRDG Prize for Excellent Contribution to Magnetic Resonance awarded by The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Institute of Physics (IOP), UK (Feb 2015).
研究领域
The central topic of my research is long-lived nuclear spin order in magnetic resonance. Singlet order is a peculiar population distribution between spin energy level that can be maintained for very long time (minutes to hours). Singlet order is also NMR silent and accessible on demand. The main focus of my research is to develop an understanding, methodology and technology that exploit the use of long-lived spin order as a reservoir for nuclear spin hyperpolarisation storage or as a smart probe or as a long-lived tag for NMR and MRI application.
As such, my research involves the development of NMR/MRI pulse sequences, analytical and numerical spin dynamics calculations, relaxation theory, technological developments, and synthetic chemistry. Applications include real space imaging of molecular motions (such as diffusion and flow), tortuosity measurements in porous media, and sensing application via hyperpolarised singlet NMR.
Other research interests include development of methodology for distance measurements in multi-labelled solids via solid-state NMR.
