Roz Anderson is Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry in the School of Pharmacy. She graduated from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and a PhD in Organic Chemistry, then joined the University of Sunderland in 1987, when it was Sunderland Polytechnic, as a post-doctoral fellow. After securing a Lectureship in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1990, Roz was promoted to Senior Lecturer, then Principal Lecturer, and finally Professor in 2008. From 2003-2009, she was programme leader for the MPharm programme; since 2009, Roz has led the laboratory-based science research at the University and is joint lead for the Health Sciences and Well-being Research Beacon.

Roz’s research interests are rooted in pharmaceutical chemistry, covering rational drug design, prodrugs, proteomics, and analytical science, with a focus on finding solutions to medicinal problems and the translation of results into clinical use. Her current research interests include: the design of novel prodrugs for the treatment of the rare disease cystinosis; investigation of the protein expression in cystinotic cells and the effects of the treatment cysteamine; the design, synthesis and evaluation of new agents for the detection and identification of bacteria in clinical, food and environmental samples; investigations into antibiotic resistant clinical bacteria and novel agents for their eradication; the design, synthesis and evaluation of novel agents for the treatment of skin diseases, such as psoriasis and eczema; the development of novel agents and diagnostic tests to support the use of personalised medicines.
