个人简介
Prof Tim Paget is a Professor of Medical Microbiology in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing; he gained his PhD in 1987 on microbial/parasite biochemistry. After this he went on to complete a Wellcome funded postdoctoral post at Cardiff and during this time he also worked in the USA with Profs Lindmark and Jarroll both internationally renowned for their work on the biochemistry and physiology of Giardia. Since then he has worked as an academic in a number of institutions most recently before Sunderland he was Chair of Chemistry at Lehman College, City University of New York. During his career he has maintained his research interest in parasite physiology and his contribution to this area was highlighted when he was asked to organise the 65th meeting of the International Society for Protozoology held at the University of Kent at Canterbury, 2010. His research has also extended into the areas of microbial detection and pathogen control and this has lead to several industrial linked grants (with Smith and Nephew) and a large NEAT (DoH) grant.
研究领域
His current research covers a range of areas but his major focus is on an important but often overlooked parasite Giardia duodenalis. This parasite can be found worldwide but is endemic in many continents. It is also the most commonly isolated water borne pathogen in the UK. Giardia infects hundreds of millions of people every year and is a major cause of failure to thrive syndrome in children. He is involved in several projects looking at how Giardia regulates cell transformation during its life cycle and the factors that contribute to drug treatment failure. He is also interested in identifying new approaches for the control of microbial infections such as the development of new drugs for use in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (the use of light and drugs activated by light to kill microorganisms) and developing novel methods for the detection of pathogens.
