个人简介

I obtained BPharm (Hons) and MPharm (postgraduate) degrees from the University of Dhaka, and secured first class first position in order of merit in both programmes. I completed my PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Phytochemistry) from the University of Strathclyde, under the supervision of one of the pioneers in phytochemistry research in the UK, Professor Peter G Waterman, and also Professor Alexander I Gray. I am a Professor of Pharmacy, and have been the Director of the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at the Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) since 2013, and providing strategic, operational, financial, academic and research leadership to the School. I am also the Head of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Porducts Research Group within the school. Prior to the current post, I had worked as a Professor of Pharmacy, Deputy Head of Department of Pharmacy (now School), and Pharmacy Research Group Leader at the University of Wolverhampton during 2008-2013. I also had held a number of other academic/research positions, e.g., Reader in Pharmacy, University of Ulster where I was the Chair of the MPharm Course Planning Team, and the Course Director for the BSc (Hons) Pharmacology and the PgD/MSc Pharmaceutical Sciences programmes; Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Robert Gordon University; Senior Natural Products Scientist and Head of Spectroscopy Group, Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER); BBSRC Post-doctoral Research Fellow, University of Exeter and Lecturer in Pharmacy, University of Dhaka. I have been a Visiting Professor at University of Technology Malaysia, Stamford University, Tripoli University, North-South University, and most recently, University of Dammam. I am an international advisor to the State University of Bangladesh. I have been a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2007. I have more than 20 years of graduate and postgraduate teaching experience in pharmaceutics (advanced formulations, and biopharmaceutics) pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry, phytochemistry, drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics, natural product drug discovery and development, pharmacognosy, NMR spectroscopy and chromatography. I am a well-trained, highly experienced, outstandingly productive, and highly cited internationally known accomplished pharmaceutical, medicinal and natural products chemist, with more than 25 years of postgraduate research experience, and well over 400 publications to my credit. Total Google Scholar citations: 8175, h-index: 41 and i10-index: 228. I am the co-editor of the books Natural Products Isolation, 2nd edition, and Magnolia: The Genus Magnolia, published, respectively, by Humana Press in 2005 and Taylor and Francis in 2001. I, together with Dr Lutfun Nahar, authored the popular textbook, Chemistry for Pharmacy Students: General, Organic and Natural Products Chemistry, published in 2007 by the John Wiley and Sons. This book has been translated in Portuguese (2009), Japanese (2012) and Greek (2015) languages. Currently I have been working on the second edition of the Chemistry textbook. Dr Nahar and I edited the 3rd edition of Natural Products Isolation, which was published by Humana Press/Springer-Verlag in 2012, and we wrote the book, 'Steroid Dimers: Chemistry and Applications in Drug Design and Deliver', published by John Wiley and Sons in 2012, which is the first and only book published on steroid dimers. I contributed a total of 22 book chapters in the books, ‘Magnolia: The Genus Magnolia’, ‘Natural Products Isolation’, ‘The Genus Phyllanthus’, ‘The Genus Curcuma’, ‘ Honey in Traditional and Modern Medicine’, 'Evidence-Based Validation of Herbal Medicine-Farm to Pharma' and 'Eugenol Containing Essential Oils of Cloves, Allspice, Cinnamon/Cassia and Bay Leaf' and 'Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products'. I took over the role of the Editor-in-Chief of the Wiley journal, Phytochemical Analysis in 2010, and served in the editorial board of the journals, Phytochemical Analysis (2006-2009) and Natural Product Communications (2007-2010). I am currently in the editorial board of 25 international journals, including Scientific Reports which is published by the prestigious Nature Publishing Group. I was the Guest Editor for the special issue of Natural Product Communications dedicated to Professor Peter Waterman in 2008, the special issue of Advances in Pharmacological Sciences on ‘Anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive and antipyretic activities of medicinal plants and their constituents’ published in 2012, and the special issue of Medicines in 2016. I am a regular reviewer of >75 international journals..

研究领域

My research is in the area of pharmaceutical and natural products chemistry as well as in the area of rational drug design (medicinal chemistry). My research focuses on anticancer, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties (against multiple-drug-resistant bacterial strains, e.g. MRSA) of purified compounds from higher plants as well as novel synthetic organic compounds.

My research interests include: drug discovery from natural products; drug design - novel indane derivatives as analgesic compounds; drug design - dimeric steroids as molecular umbrellas; synthesis of bioactive natural products; metabolomics of medicinal plants; production of compound libraries of dereplicated natural products for high throughput screening (HTS); toxicological evaluation and quality control of herbal medicine; development of bioassays for screening plant extracts and isolated compounds; application of 1D and 2D NMR techniques in drug discovery and design; chemotaxonomy; pharmInformatics. I have established research collaborations with research groups from all over the world.
