Steve studies Chemistry as an Undergraduate at Oxford, followed by a DPhil investigating the mechanism of double photoionisation. This project included spending time at Universite Paris Sud. Following a Junior Research Fellowship at Worcester College he spent two years as a research fellow in the Joint Laboratory for Astrophsyics in Boulder CO, returning to the UK to a lectureship at UCL in 1993. He's been at UCL ever since and currently has a joint appointment between Chemistry and the Arts and Sciences programme. We are interested in developing experimental techniques to study the formation, properties and reactivity of atoms and molecules which posses considerable internal energy. This energy is usually electronic, vibrational or both. The targets of our experiments range from revealing the reactivity of molecular dications, which is of relevance in planetary ionospheres, to studying the formation of new molecules on cold (20 K) interstellar dust grains.
