个人简介

I joined the Faculty of Science, LJMU, as an Honorary Lecturer in May 2013. I am an active member of the Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products Research Group within the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences. Prior to this current position, I worked as a Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, and coordinated the Drug Discovery and Design Research Division within the Pharmacy Research Group. I was also the ERASMUS coordinator at UoW (2008-2011). Previously, I had also held a number of other academic/research positions, e.g., Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Leicester School of Pharmacy, De Montfort University, Lecturer in Medicinal Chemistry at the Robert Gordon University, Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Ulster, Visiting Professor at the Tripoli University, Research Scientist at the Rowett Research Institute, MRC Fellowship at the Robert Gordon University and Post-doctoral Fellowship at the University of Aberdeen. I graduated with a Chemistry (Hons) degree from the University of Exeter and obtained my PhD in Synthetic Organic Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Aberdeen. I am a well-trained organic medicinal and natural products chemist, with years of experience in classical and modern organic synthesis as well as various chromatographic separation and purification e.g., high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and spectroscopic identification techniques, e.g. nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) and mass spectrometry (MS). To date, I have published well over 257 peer-reviewed scientific papers, invited reviews, abstracts, books and book chapters in the area of Synthetic Organic Medicinal and Natural Products Chemistry. Total Google Scholar citations: 5850, h-index: 36 and i10-index: 148. My current research interests include: application of organic synthetic methodologies in different areas of chemistry; Design and synthesis of novel anticancer, antimalarial, antibacterial and antioxidant agents; Design and synthesis of 'nanoparticles' and 'molecular umbrellas' for drug delivery and other application; Synthesis of biologically active macrocyclic polyamines, steroid monomers and dimers; Synthesis of bioactive natural products and pharmaceutically important small molecules; Isolation and structure determination of bioactive phytochemicals; Rational drug design and combinatorial synthesis; Computer assisted design of bioactive molecules (molecular modeling) and structure activity relationships (SAR) of bioactive compounds. Current/Recent Research Fundings: Commonwealth Scholarship for PhD research (Stephanie Tandem, 2015-2018) Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education Scholarship for PhD research (Shaymaa Al-Majmae, 2015-2018) University of Punjab Staff Development Scholarship for PhD research (Shabnam Javed, 2015) Algerian Government Scholarship for PhD research (Sara Maarfia, 2015-2016) Pakistan Higher Education Commission Scholarship for PhD research (Kashif Khan, 2015) Libyan Government Scholarship for PhD research (Afaf Al-Groshi, 2014-2017) Liverpool John Moores University Scholarship for PhD research (Alexandra Zavoianu, 2014-2017) INSPIRE project funded by the British Council (2011-2013) TUBITAK funding for PhD research (Ipek Suntar, 2010-2011) EPSRC Mass Spectral Analysis Quota (2009-2011) I, together with Prof Satya Sarker, authored the popular textbook, ‘Chemistry for Pharmacy Students: General, Organic and Natural Products Chemistry’, published by John Wiley & Sons in 2007, and this book was translated in Portuguese (2009), Japanese (2012) and Greek (2015). Currently I have been working on the second edition of the Chemistry textbook. Prof Sarker and I edited the 3rd edition of the book, ‘Natural Products Isolation’, published by Humana Press/Springer-Verlag in 2012, and we wrote the book, 'Steroid Dimers: Chemistry and Applications in Drug Design and Deliver', published by John Wiley and Sons in 2012, which is the first and only book published on steroid dimers. I also co-authored a total of 15 book chapters in the following books: Magnolia: The Genus Magnolia Natural Products Isolation The Genus Phyllanthus The Genus Curcuma Honey in Traditional and Modern Medicine Evidence-Based Validation of Herbal Medicine - Farm to Pharma Eugenol Containing Essential Oils of Cloves, Allspice, Cinnamon/Cassia and Bay Leaf Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products Since January 2010, I have been working as the Managing Editor of the Phytochemical Analysis, published by John Wiley and Sons, and a regular reviewer for 21 international journals. I am in the Editorial Board of the international journals: Scientific Reports (publish by the prestigious Nature Publishing Group) Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics Journal of Chem and Biochemistry World Journal of Natural Products Research Updates International Journal of Synthesis and Characterization ISRN Chromatography E-Journal of Chemistry Tripolitana Medical Journal I was the Guest Editor for the special issue of Advances in Pharmacological Sciences on ‘Anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive and antipyretic activities of medicinal plants and their constituents’ published in 2012. Currently, I have been Guest Editing the special issue of Medicines. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2009 and a memeber of the Royal Society of Chemistry since 2003. I have been the moderator of the well-established on-line discussion group in natural products research, NatProDis (to find out more pls visit http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/natprodis.html). My scientific profile has been published in the Marquis ‘Who's Who in the World‘ and “Who's Who in Science and Engineering” 2009-2016 and 2010-2016, respectively.
