PhD in Human Nutrition, specifically content analysis of antioxidant rich foods, and the effects of bioactive compounds in postprandial glycaemic control. Previously Lecturer in Nutrition at Oxford Brookes University and CSO for health technology company 'Nudjed'. Currently supported as a Sêr Cymru Fellow, by the National Research Network for Low Carbon, Energy and Environment (NRN-LCEE) under the 'Plants and Architecture' cluster. This is a multi-centre project between IBERS, Bangor University Biocomposites Centre and The Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University. The project aims to generate new research activity between the disciplines of Plant Science, Materials Science and Architecture, through the lens of biomimicry with an ambition to inform the development of future cities.

Green Infrastructure: Current research involves the investigation of green infrastructure (particularly green roofs and green walls) in terms of the contribution of vegetation to the ascribed benefits, both directly and through modelling approaches. Green roofs in particular are unique ecosystems which face a variety of extreme conditions including drought, heat stress, elevated CO2, low nutrient status, water-logging and wind stress at different times of the year in different locations. The plasticity of the vegetation in the face of these stresses underpins their contribution to building energy models and to urban microclimates. This work has been supported by commercial partners including green roof installers Sky Garden Ltd (www.sky-garden.co.uk), green roof substrate manufacturers Boughton Loam Ltd (www.boughton.co.uk) and the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI). Urban vegetation is also vital from the point of view of urban wildlife, particularly pollinators, and this project is also exploring the role of green roofs in urban apiculture with colleagues at Cardiff University and Pollen8Cymru (www.pollen8cymru.com). Urban Agriculture: A separate strand of work is being developed toward investigating the biological responses of plants to controlled environment agriculture, oftentimes termed 'vertical farming'. We will be utilising sophisticated tuneable LED technologies to understand how different crops respond to this unique method of agricultural production.
