Following and initial 6 years at the Welsh Plant Breeding Station when Dr Humphreys researched on developing tissue culture techniques for haploid barley, he has subsequently over the last 36 years commenced and developed procedures for successful gene transfers primarily through genome introgression from a range of diverse fescue species into ryegrass, in many cases now used globally. Having proven their efficacy he has transferred genes for adaptations to drought, cold, flooding, & for improved ruminant nutrition into breeders' lines for commercial development. He has developed the only Festulolium variety (AberNiche) to be included onto the UK National Recommended Varieties List. He led the EU Framework V Project SAGES (QLK5-CT-2000-00764) and has participated in several EU-funded programmes. Through translational science funded by Defra, BBSRC and industry he has developed drought tolerant ryegrass with fescue genes conferring >80% improved water-use-efficiency. He has pioneered studies for deep rooting, improved soil hydrology, & for ecosystem services such as flood mitigation & for C sequestration. Findings published in 2013 Nature Scientific Reports described >51% reduction in rainfall run-off due to root-soil interactions. The research on flood mitigation has led to a ?2.5m BBSRC-LINK project SUREROOT (2014-2018) () match-funded by industry which has wide-spread UK and international media interest. Dr Humphreys works in close association both at IBERS and elsewhere with researchers in allied disciplines including plant breeders, soil physicists, soil chemists, soil hydrologists, and experts in ruminant nutrition in order to embrace the full potential of Festulolium grasses both for agriculture and increasingly for ecosystem service.
