I was born in Paisley in the West of Scotland and spent my formative years in the village of Cardross (where Robert the Bruce lived and where the author A.J. Cronin, and more recently the sports commentator Hazel Irvine, were born). I was at Trinity College, Cambridge University from 1976-83, initially studying metallurgy and materials science then staying to do a PhD in solid-state electrochemistry. After a short spell in industry I joined the Corrosion and Protection Centre (CPC) at the former UMIST where I have remained

My research interests are varied covering the majority of interests in corrosion science and engineering and in corrosion protection and control.
