Physical Chemistry
In the Crabtree group, we are interested in measuring the rates of chemical reactions and energy transfer processes in gas-phase collisions at low temperatures (<150 K), with an emphasis on processes that are relevant for interstellar chemistry and planetary atmospheres. Experimentally, we combine molecular beam methods with laser spectroscopy and state-of-the-art chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave (CP-FTMW) spectroscopy to initiate and monitor chemistry in controlled collisional environments. The CP-FTMW technique allows us to simultaneously monitor reactant loss, product formation, and excitation with a high degree of selectivity: we can readily discriminate between isomers and even conformers. Our detailed rate data can be directly incorporated into simulations of the chemistry occurring in remote regions of space and in both terrestrial and extraterrestrial atmospheres. We envision strong collaborations with other chemists, astronomers, physicists, and geologists in order to advance understanding of the chemical origins of planets and their atmospheres.
