Dr. Erica Weir joined the Department of Medicine in March 2014 as a clinical epidemiologist and public health physician. Dr. Weir brings a unique set of competencies to the Department, certified with both the Royal College as a Public Health and Preventive Medicine specialist and the College of Family Physicians as a family doctor with a focused practice designation in care of the elderly. Dr. Weir began her career in public health as a sociologist. She received the Queen’s medal in Sociology and a British Commonwealth award to complete post-graduate studies in Social Research Methods at the University of Surrey. Her interest in understanding patterns of behaviour in populations expanded into patterns of diseases. After completing residency training at McMaster University and a Master of Science in Epidemiology at the University of Toronto, Dr. Weir worked for several years in Ontario as an associate medical officer of health within local public health units overseeing the delivery of public health programs and conducting applied public health research. Early in her medical career Dr. Weir received a fellowship to train as an editor with the Canadian Medical Association Journal. She continued with CMAJ for many years as a part-time scientific editor and public health columnist, often receiving national attention for her pithy commentaries and articles. In 2012 Dr Weir undertook a year of enhanced skills training in elder care to assist with this imminent public health concern. Dr. Weir is cross appointed to the Department of Public Health Sciences. She divides her time between providing clinical elder care with Providence Care and strategic direction to the Master of Public Health program to enhance student scholarship in both Departments.
