Dr. Ray Viola is a Palliative Care physician and an Associate Professor in the Division of Palliative Medicine, Department of Medicine at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, with cross-appointments in the Departments of Family Medicine, Oncology, and Community Health and Epidemiology. He trained in medicine at the University of Toronto, family medicine at Queen's University and palliative medicine at the University of Ottawa. He obtained a Masters degree in epidemiology at the University of Ottawa in 1997. Prior to joining the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s in 2003, he was a faculty member in the Division of Palliative Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa between 1997 and 2003. Dr. Viola’s clinical and research interests are in the field of end-of-life/palliative care. His clinical practice involves primarily inpatient acute hospital care and consultations at Kingston General Hospital and ambulatory cancer clinics at the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario at KGH. His scholarly interests include prognosticating survival for palliative care patients, methods of symptom assessment and symptom management and community interventions to facilitate palliative care delivery in patients’ homes. His research activities include systematic reviews, health services research, clinical trials and guideline development.
