I trained in general neurology at Queen's University and provide neurology consultation services to patients in the emergency department and in the hospital, including acute stroke care. I hold specialty certifications from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Internal Medicine (1977) and Neurology (1978). With sponsorship from the Medical Research Council of Canada, I completed a 2 year fellowship in clinical neurphysiology at the University of California, San Diego with a focus on computer applications in EEG interpretation. I have continued this interest and research to the present day. After returning on staff to Queen's University in 1980, I established an evoked potential laboratory mainly to study patients with multiple sclerosis. Then I started our continuing program in intensive EEG and video monitoring for patients with epilepsy which has been very successful. Later ambulatory 24 hour EEG was added and most recently a program of continuous EEG monitoring in the ICU has been initiated. KGH has provided modern equipment and software for all of these activities. I continue to be the medical director of clinical neurophysiology at the KGH. In 1984 I began my clinical subspecialty of multiple sclerosis care by establishing an MS clinic with the aim of prviding multidisiplinary care and this work continues, now at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston. From this clinic, with staff supported generously by the MS Society, has come studies of the quality of life in MS as well as participation in numerous clinical trials of new therapies for MS. This has allowed some patients to access new treatments much earlier that would have been the case in usual clinical work. Administratively, I currently chair the Division of Neurology in the Queen's Department of Medicine and I am neurology service chief at KGH. Previously, I have been program director for core medicine, deputy head of the Department of Medicine for 10 years and acting head of the Department of Medicine. My overall philosophy is to provide comprehensive care for all patients that consult me.
