Dr. Yuka Asai joins the Division of Dermatology at Queen’s from McGill University. A prairie native, she obtained her Bachelor of Science at the University of Alberta and her MD at the University of Saskatchewan. She completed her dermatology training at McGill University, from which she received an MSc in Epidemiology and where she is pursuing her PhD.
Her research interests include allergy, genetics and epidemiology. She is interested in the interaction of the skin with other systems and how it may act as a gatekeeper, indicator, or therapeutic tool for systemic disease. She spearheaded research into the association between the eczema gene, filaggrin, and its association with peanut allergy. She is interested in evidence-based clinical dermatology guidelines.
As an educator, Dr. Asai provides training to residents and students and is known for her engaging clinical and didactic teaching.
Dr. Asai provides consultation service to the Kingston General Hospital and outpatient service at the Hotel Dieu Hospital.

Dr Asai pursued research training following her clinical dermatology training, supported by a Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Fellowship training award and an AllerGen NCE Canadian Allergy and Immune Diseases Advanced Training Initiative (CAIDATI) training award. Her Master’s work, a collaborative international effort, examined mutations in the skin barrier gene filaggrin in peanut allergy.
She is currently furthering this work by pursuing a PhD in Experimental Medicine at McGill University while on staff at Queen’s.
She is a member of the Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines group for acne and rosacea.
Dr. Asai has received support from Allergen NCE, the Canadian Dermatology Foundation, Canadian Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Foundation (CAAIF), the Asthma Allergy Information Association (AAIA), the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation and CIHR.
