The three-dimensional structures of proteins have an inherent beauty. We explore the structure and function of proteins by designing and synthesizing mimics of peptides, a process of sculpture on the molecular level. We design the organic molecules using computers, and synthesize each one using stereoselective reactions. We make peptide mimics to constrain biopolymers inspired by the structural protein, collagen. Pin1 is an enzyme that regulates cell signaling in a wide range of disease states. We make inhibitors of Pin1, and investigate the potential of these compounds to fight a variety of cancers, asthma, diabetes, cocaine addiction, and Alzheimer’s diseases.
