Andrew Davies has enjoyed twenty years with the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust, before joining the Paramedic Science Programme at Swansea University. He has previously studied at the University, graduating from the BSc Pre-Hospital Care programme in 2008. Andrew finds that the development of students is a challenging but rewarding process, exacerbated by a rapidly changing context in which their practice is located. Andrew details that these changes have influenced the curriculum, emphasising the need to inject critical and reflective thinking skills into his teaching. As such, the majority of his teaching is focused on developing these skills with students, whilst maintaining a balance with lecture content. Andrew's teaching role also involves the Work-Based Learning programme where he facilitates registered paramedics to enhance their professional practice. In contrast to pre-registration programmes, Andrew believes that this process is heavily weighted towards facilitating conceptual understanding, self-discovery and viewing professional practice through a variety of lenses. The evolving role of paramedics is an area that interests Andrew, as the Paramedic profession is moving towards requiring reflexive approaches in order to match the demands of an ever changing setting. Although this concept has already been implemented into the curriculum, Andrew believes that evaluating how this is applied into practice beyond teaching would be worthy of research. Andrew’s advice to prospective and current students is centred on the decision making process. It needs to be robust, defendable and within an evidence-based framework that addresses any external factors that enable or inhibit positive patient outcomes. His advice is; know your limitations and always aim to seek advice and support when decision making is beyond your personal knowledge base. Andrew spends any spare time, outside of his family life, in clinical practice maintaining his knowledge and skills as an advanced practitioner.
