The Romark Centre for Drug Discovery was established in this Department in 2004. Funded by Romark LC of Tampa, USA, we are engaged in the design and synthesis of new antiinfective agents, with the main current emphasis on antivirals.
Natural Product Chemistry: Carbohydrate chemistry is a major interest of the group. In particular new methods of glycosidation using glycosyl iodides have been developed and selective acylation has been exploited in an efficient new synthesis of acyl glucuronides. Other carbohydrate interests are the synthesis of novel carbohydrate-based antibacterials and pyranose-based carbopeptoids.
Metabolism: We collaborate with Kevin Park’s group in Pharmacology and with major pharmaceutical companies in the application of chemical synthesis to issues of drug metabolism and potential toxicity. Here again the synthesis of glucuronides, especially acyl glucuronides, is an important feature.
