个人简介

I supervised the hydraulic modelling of the intake works from the Danube for the Sadova-Corabia irrigation scheme, Romania; and I designed the original harbour at Raysut, Oman, now massively expanded and renamed as the Port of Salalah. Best paper award, 2013 (American Society of Civil Engineers 2014) Invited lecture, International Navigation Association (Invitation to Speak, PIANC 2008) Keynote lecture, Edge Hill University (Keynote Speech, Edge Hill University 2008) Invited lecture, National Civil Engineering Laboratory, Portugal (Invitation to Speak, LNEC 2008) Invited lecture, Port and Airport Research Institute, Japan (Invitation to Speak, Daiwa Foundation 2006) Invited lecture, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, Japan (Invitation to Speak, Daiwa Foundation 2006) Invited lecture, Kanazawa University, Japan (Invitation to Speak, Daiwa Foundation 2006) Nomination for National Teaching Fellowship (Competitive Fellowship, Higher Education Academy 2004) Recognition award (University of Liverpool 2002) Invited lecture, Association for Science Education (Invitation to Speak, University of Liverpool 2002) Invited presentation, Consultative Workshop on Coastal Defence and Wave Overtopping (Invitation to Speak, HR Wallingford 2002) IAWQ Pergamon Publications Medal (Prize, International Association on Water Quality 2000) Sir Alastair Pilkington Award (Prize, University of Liverpool 1998) Invited lecture, National Civil Engineering Laboratory, Portugal (Invitation to Speak, LNEC 1996) Invited lecture, Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (Invitation to Speak, KORDI 1996) Special commendation and certificate (UK Department of Trade and Industry 1986)

研究领域

My papers formed a major source for the material on wave-current interaction in the UK Department of Energy's 'Background Guidance on the Design and Construction of Fixed Offshore Structures'. The British Standards Institution's BS6349: Part 7, 'Design and Construction of Breakwaters', drew its main recommendations relating to the cores and underlayers of rubble-mound structures from my 1983 paper on the subject. The International Organization for Standardization's ISO 21650: 2007, 'Actions from Waves and Currents on Coastal Structures', references my work on wave-current interaction, as well as more recent studies on the wave overtopping of seawalls. I was appointed to the British Standards Institution's Technical Committee CB/502, Maritime Works, in 2010. My empirical modification to linear wave theory is used widely in predicting nearshore wave conditions and in determining nearshore bathymetry by remote sensing of waves. More recently, my research has focused on the assessment of the safety of sea defences, particularly with regard to wave overtopping. The Hedges and Reis wave overtopping model has been adopted by the Environment Agency of England and Wales, North-East Region, as part of its coastal flood forecasting and warning system. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency also selected the model for its coastal flood warning system for the Firths of Forth and Tay. I served on two national committees concerned with the design of seawalls between 1977 and 1992. In 1986, I received a special commendation and certificate (with Prof B.A.O'Connor) for our entry in the Technology Transfer Section of the Industry Year Award organized by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry. The submission described our partnership with the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in the development of the North Wirral Coast Defences. With other colleagues, I also received the IAWQ Pergamon Publications Medal for 2000 for our paper on Marine-Based Waste Stabilisation Ponds. The paper described our research on floating enclosures anchored in sheltered coastal regions for the low-cost treatment of waste water, especially where land availability is limited. I was an Associate Editor and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) from 2003 to 2009. With Japanese and Portuguese colleagues, I received a 2013 Best Paper Award from ASCE for our paper entitled Wave Runup and Overtopping at Seawalls Built on Land and in Very Shallow Water.
