Carlos obtained his medical degree in 1982 at Autonoma University of Madrid, Spain and his PhD in Medicine in the same University in 1988. Carlos has spent his career in academia, but has maintained his clinical practice and focus throughout. After his medical graduation Carlos developed his medical specialty training from 1984 to 1988 at the Cruz Roja Hospital in Madrid, and simultaneously developed his PhD studies in management of sepsis in elderly patients. From 1989 to 1991, while working in hospital practice in Spain, he developed his role as a consultant in Geriatric Medicine, and in 1991 moved to the town of Vigo, in the north-west of Spain, were he was the Head of the Geriatric Medicine Department at Meixoeiro Hospital for 24 years until moving to the University Lincoln in June 2015. In addition to this clinical background, Carlos has always been involved in teaching and clinical research. Over the years, in Vigo, he was involved in teaching at the University of Vigo Nursing School, was associate professor in the department of Medicine at Santiago de Compostela University, and developed a PhD program in clinical Geriatric Medicine for six years at the University of Vigo. During this period he supervised a number of PhD and postgraduate students. Additionally, he achieved his department accreditation for postgraduate specialty training in Geriatric Medicine. Over the last ten years his work has been mainly devoted to cardiovascular diseases in elderly patients, developing cardiogeriatric services shared with the departments of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery. His clinical research has been in relation to diabetes, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and aortic stenosis in elderly patients. He has achieved a number of national competitive grants to develop research in these areas and participated in european proposals. He is settled in the School of Pharmacy and share his activity between the University and Lincoln County Hospital.
