Tobias obtained a chemistry degree in 2004 and a PhD in organic and supramolecular chemistry in 2008 from the University of Freiberg/Saxony (PhD adviser: Edwin Weber). After one year at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the group of Manfred Jung (Freiburg/Breisgau), where Tobias worked on the development of histone deacetylase inhibitors, he moved to the University of Oxford for a postdoctoral stay in the group of Christopher Schofield to perform research in the field of antibiotics. In 2011, Tobias started his independent research career in Braunschweig and moved later back to Freiberg. Since November 2015, Tobias is a Senior Lecturer in the College of Science in Lincoln. His research interests include artificial receptors for biologically active compounds, medicinal chemistry and crystal engineering. The outcome of this research is of interest to a number other science branches, e.g. Biology and Medicine. Recent research deals with selective receptors for methylammonium ions. These occur as structural motifs in a variety of biological active compounds, e.g. as post-translational methylation of lysine residues in respective proteins or small molecules like acetylcholine, ephedrine or methamphetamine. They have high medicinal relevance, though some are used illicitly. A specific complexation of such compounds is an envisaged basis for sensor active materials, which will open new fields in the field of diagnostics and therapy. A second branch of Tobias’ research provides the basis for a novel synthesis pathway of bicyclic gamma-lactams from the somewhat larger caprolactams. Further elaboration of these synthetic sequences will contribute to the preparation of new antibiotics and lactamase inhibitors to be used against resistant bacteria strains. In the last years Tobias established a network of national and international collaborators.
