Steven grew up in South Shields, a seaside town in the north east of England. He completed his B.Sc. (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences in 2002. Following a brief spell working in the biotechnology industry, he undertook a Ph.D. in Genetics under the mentorship of Professor David Lydall (Newcastle University, UK), using budding yeast as a model organism to study the cellular responses to dysfunctional telomeres. He then moved to New York to conduct his postdoctoral training with Dr. John Petrini at the world-renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Expanding his repertoire to include mammalian cell tissue culture and mouse models, he studied chromosome break metabolism and the basic mechanisms of cancer. Steven returned to the UK in 2013 to establish his own research laboratory within the illustrious Department of Genetics at the University of Leicester.
