My main interest is the biology of ageing. From a combined evolutionary and biomedical perspective I study why all organisms, including our own species, slowly deteriorate physiologically to eventually cause death. I use comparative, theoretical and meta-analytic methods to study this process and use Drosophila melanogaster as a powerful genetic model system. I focus on these specific topics: Demography of mortality Dietary restriction Costs of reproduction and the evolution of ageing Biology of cancer and cellular senescence Telomere length and dynamics
