Role I am subject lead for the Sociology of Health and Illness at Plymouth University Peninsula Medical School. In addition to being responsible for the sociology elements of the medical school curricula I undertake a variety of teaching and management roles including Problem Based Learning (PBL), academic tutoring and case unit management, teaching and research SSu's. I co chair the School's Feedback Working Group and am lead for evaluation. Qualifications BEd (Hons), MSc (Social Research), Phd (Sociology) Professional membership British Sociological Association - member Behavioural and Social Sciences Teaching in Medical Education (BeSST) - committee member and treasurer Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy Roles on external bodies I am a member of the HEA supported, BeSST sociology working group. The group is working to explore and promote the role of sociology teaching in medical education and to develop best practice in this area. Current work involves, a historical literature review of sociology teaching in medical education in the US and the UK and organising and running regional workshops in the UK to explore both the scope of sociology teaching in UK medical schools and the opportunities and challenges experienced by teachers today.

My interests revolve around applied sociological research into the field of medical education and particularly the area of social science teaching and learning. Projects that I am currently involved in are: 1. The professional identities of scientists. A collaborative project between 5 medical schools, exploring the experiences and career trajectories of biomedical scientists working in teaching and research focused posts in medical schools. 2. Sociology teaching in medical education: future directions. A collaborative project with sociologists working in 8 medical schools involving: a review of the literature; a series of regional workshops and the development of core guidelines for sociology teaching and assessment in medical education. 3. Working with students to design e-learning resources for social science learning in medical education. A collaborative project between Peninsula Medical School and Plymouth Education Department. 4. Students as partners in developing learning resources: a study of pedagogical merit. A collaborative project between Peninsula Medical School, the University of Plymouth Faculties of Education and the Business School. 5.
